Harvard employees who have shown exceptional service were recognized in a ceremony at Sanders Theatre. On Thursday, 71 staff members were honored as Harvard Heroes, celebrated by family, friends, and colleagues. They were chosen from over 1,000 nominations, with department heads applauding their achievements. President Alan M. Garber commended their dedication amidst challenges, highlighting their contributions to the University’s mission.
The ceremony featured music by Janelle Monae and warm welcomes from Executive Vice President Meredith Weenick. Manuel Cuevas-Trisán, vice president for human resources, called the honorees “true superstars” and introduced Garber, who emphasized the importance of their work in research, teaching, and learning during a tough year.
Among the honorees were Kathleen Refior and Sophie Spengler from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and Luis Guerrero from Dumbarton Oaks. Garber offered personal accolades, noting the significant impact each had on their respective fields and communities.
Alumni Affairs and Development recognized Kellie Celia and Claudia Hartmann for creating protective and joyful processes. Amy Mendez from Arnold Arboretum was praised for her leadership and engagement. Campus Services celebrated several individuals, including Francisco Mancio for fostering community spirit.
In the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, honorees like Claire Adams and Carol Ampey-Sullivan were acknowledged for their contributions to student and family experiences. Brandon Johnson from Financial Administration received praise for his steadfast care in research finance.
Carola Houttuijn Bloemendaal at Harvard Art Museums was noted for her enthusiastic management. Harvard Business School saw recognition for Lucia Barros, while Josie Lee and Amie Montemurro were highlighted at Harvard Divinity School. Rafaella Hyde from Harvard Federal Credit Union was honored for positively impacting lives.
Esther Chong Weathers and Lindsey Grant LaGrasse at the Graduate School of Design were recognized for fostering connection and respect. The Graduate School of Education honored Nicole Barone and others for adapting to changing needs. Shannon Gerah from Human Resources was commended for fairness and integrity.
Jim MacArthur at the School of Engineering was celebrated for teaching researchers to think like engineers.
