Harvard Alumni Day, which has over 150 years of tradition, recently celebrated its fifth anniversary. This event, part of the 2026 Commencement series, brought together alumni on June 5 to honor Harvard’s extensive alumni network of more than 400,000 graduates. Established in 2022, the day aims to highlight Harvard’s global alumni community, encouraging former students to reconnect and forge new relationships.
The celebration occurs alongside reunions and other alumni events, featuring notable speakers, a gathering in Harvard Yard, and the awarding of Harvard Medals for exceptional service to the University. Despite being in its fifth year, Alumni Day draws from the long-standing Annual Meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association, now in its 156th year. The event kicks off with an all-alumni parade, led by the chief marshal and the oldest alumni present, moving from the Old Yard to Tercentenary Theatre, where the sheriff of Middlesex County officially opens the meeting.
The program, hosted by the Harvard Alumni Association board president, includes a speech by a guest speaker. In 2026, President Alan Garber and Jonny Kim, an astronaut and Navy SEAL, delivered speeches. Those unable to attend could watch via livestream. Additional activities included an open house at Harvard University Archives, Harvard Art Museums, Shared Interest Group Meetups, and afternoon symposia.
The event has evolved over five years, with alumni parading past Widener Library to Tercentenary Theatre in 2025, and notable figures like Bertram Huberman ’44 and George Post ’45 participating in 2024. The festivities continue to draw alumni together, and the 2026 Harvard Alumni Day featured performances by Harvard choral groups and a keynote address by Jonny Kim.
