Health researcher I-Min Lee, who grew up surrounded by laborers, now investigates the impacts of inactivity. At Harvard, she has authored numerous studies on exercise and heart health, contributing to large-scale projects like the Harvard Alumni Health Study and the Women’s Health Study.
Lee, an epidemiologist specializing in physical activity, often felt out of place at conferences early in her career. “Many colleagues were former athletes or dancers,” she noted, recalling her discomfort during discussions about marathon times. Raised in Malaysia during the 1960s and ’70s, Lee’s peers engaged in physical labor, while aspirations leaned toward securing air-conditioned desk jobs.
Currently a professor at Harvard Medical School and the T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Lee recognizes the health risks of sedentary lifestyles. “Now, I can do everything from my phone or computer without moving,” she remarked. She has published around 650 papers on the link between inactivity and diseases, influencing federal guidelines on physical activity.
Lee’s path to this field was unplanned. After completing medical school in Singapore in 1984, she developed an interest in biostatistics, leading her to a master’s program at Harvard. Despite initial discouragement due to her non-U.S. citizenship, she pursued her Sc.D. under Ralph Paffenberger, a pioneer in exercise-related research.
Lee has since embraced running, both for health benefits and to overcome industry peer pressure. She emphasizes relatable fitness goals for the average person, saying, “If I can do it, you can do it. I aim for reasonable activity levels.”
Her message is timely, with only 24% of U.S. adults meeting recommended activity guidelines, while 46% fall short on both aerobic and strength activities. Chronic conditions linked to inactivity are prevalent, affecting three-quarters of American adults.
Although fitness trackers have been around for years, their data is now providing deeper insights. Lee’s research, including a 2019 study, challenged the 10,000 steps goal, showing significant health benefits with just 4,400 daily steps. Further studies indicate that even modest increases in activity, like a short walk, can be beneficial.
Lee is optimistic about using detailed data to refine future federal guidelines, aiming to help individuals find suitable activities. “It’s about offering a better way of living,” she said.
