Blake Lusty, a Harvard Business School graduate, has overcome significant challenges to pursue his Navy aspirations. Diagnosed with late-stage cancer at 20, Lusty remained determined to serve his country, a dream rooted in his upbringing in St. Petersburg, Florida, by a hardworking mother who encouraged him to make a difference.
As a teenager, Lusty volunteered at a Veterans Administration hospital and was influenced by his grandfather’s experiences with World War II aircraft. Despite lacking connections, he aimed to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, which he described as a “divine intervention” that aligned with his values.
In 2010, Lusty faced a cancer diagnosis that threatened his future. Juggling chemotherapy and studies, he was determined to continue his education. His perseverance paid off when he graduated and convinced the Navy to commission him as an intelligence officer, eventually serving on the USS Forrest Sherman.
After reaching a crucial five-year cancer-free milestone, Lusty’s naval career continued with assignments in various global locations. He then faced another tumor in 2022, leading to open-heart surgery. This prompted his retirement from the Navy in 2024, allowing him to pursue an MBA at Harvard Business School.
At HBS, Lusty gained admiration for his resilience and dedication. He plans to join Bain & Co. and focus on bridging national defense and business innovation. “You have to live a life without regrets,” Lusty stated, emphasizing his commitment to seizing every opportunity.
