Henry Chu, a distinguished journalist, has been appointed as the curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism, Harvard University revealed today. “I am thrilled that Henry will be the next curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism,” commented University Provost John F. Manning. “His dedication to journalism and mentoring aligns with the foundation’s mission to enhance journalism standards globally.”
Chu, a 1990 Harvard graduate, was selected after a comprehensive search process that involved feedback from Nieman staff, Harvard community members, and key figures in the news industry, including John Harwood, chair of the Nieman Foundation’s advisory board. Harwood praised Chu’s qualifications, noting his background as a Harvard alum and former Nieman Fellow, which equips him to address the challenges journalism currently encounters.
With a career as a foreign correspondent and editor, Chu has reported from over 30 countries, mainly for the Los Angeles Times. He is set to start his new position on August 3. “I am honored to be named curator,” said Chu. “Journalism is crucial yet faces significant challenges. I appreciate Harvard’s support and look forward to collaborating with the campus community and industry leaders to help journalism flourish.”
Chu plans to leverage the foundation’s influence to unite journalists, academics, and policymakers to tackle issues like AI, press freedom, and media literacy. He also intends to enhance Nieman’s connections within Harvard and with its global alumni network. The Nieman Foundation, founded in 1938, has hosted over 1,700 journalists as Fellows. Chu will be the ninth curator in its 88-year history.
Chu began as a staff reporter for the L.A. Times, covering local topics and winning two Pulitzer Prizes. As bureau chief, he reported on major world events including U.S.-China summits and the Brexit vote. Chu was a Nieman Fellow in 2014-15 and later served as Variety’s international editor before returning to the L.A. Times. In 2024, he became deputy curator of the Nieman Foundation, and has been its interim leader since 2025, overseeing programming and mentoring Fellows.
The Nieman Foundation, established from a bequest by Agnes Wahl Nieman, aims to elevate journalism standards and support those contributing to its future. More details can be found on the foundation’s website.
