Dermatologists and oncologists welcomed the decision, highlighting its superior and longer-lasting protection compared to existing U.S. sunscreens. This approval comes amid rising melanoma rates.

Hillary Tsibris, a Harvard Medical School assistant professor of dermatology, discussed the significance of BEMT in an interview. Tsibris noted that the ingredient has been used in Europe for years but faced delays in the U.S. due to regulatory hurdles. In the U.S., sunscreen filters are treated as over-the-counter drugs, requiring extensive testing before approval, which has slowed progress compared to Europe and Asia.

The approval process for sunscreen ingredients changed in November 2025 with the SAFE Sunscreen Standards Act. This law updated the FDA’s review process, allowing the use of real-world data and expediting approvals. Tsibris believes this will facilitate access to more effective sunscreen filters globally.

BEMT offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays and is photostable, meaning it retains effectiveness when exposed to light. Unlike avobenzone, the only other approved chemical UVA filter, BEMT does not require stabilizing agents. It also avoids the white cast common with mineral sunscreens like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Studies show BEMT has low absorption, staying mostly on the skin’s surface rather than entering the bloodstream. Tsibris emphasized the importance of using a combination of sun protection methods, including clothing and shade, alongside sunscreen.

BEMT will be available for manufacturing from August 9, with an 18-month exclusivity period under the brand name Parsol Shield. Tsibris advises incorporating UPF clothing and hats, especially for those working outdoors, to minimize reapplication and maintain effectiveness.

For children over 6 months old, BEMT is recommended alongside sun-protective clothing and limited sun exposure. Melanoma rates have been rising, with a 5 to 6 percent increase in 2025, and this trend underscores the importance of effective sun protection measures.

Original Source: news.harvard.edu

The Food and Drug Administration approved bemotrizinol (BEMT) as the first new sunscreen ingredient in 20 years.
