The event, captured by Stephanie Mitchell of Harvard, addressed loneliness as a growing public health concern.

Initial national efforts to address loneliness as a societal health issue dwindled after the pandemic, amid economic challenges and political divisions. Despite this, the initiative successfully elevated awareness to the point where loneliness remains recognized as a public health issue today. “It started well, but I think it’s fair to say that COVID put a bit of a spanner in the works,” commented Tracey Crouch, a former U.K. minister for loneliness. She noted that there remains a strong global push among policymakers to address the health and social impacts of loneliness.

Experts from both the U.K. and the U.S. concurred during an event at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center. While the awareness in the U.S. was significantly heightened during the pandemic, the U.K.’s efforts began earlier. Alex Smith, a Shorenstein fellow, noted that global loneliness has been exacerbated by a societal shift towards individualism, influenced by smartphones and social media. In the U.K., the issue gained traction through academic research and the involvement of MP Jo Cox, who championed the cause after her election in 2015.

Philanthropic interest and community initiatives grew as a result, with Jo Cox playing a pivotal role in raising political awareness until her tragic murder in 2016. “Jo knew that while loneliness is a deeply personal and subjective emotion, its drivers and solutions were really everyone’s business,” said Olivia Field, head of the Jo Cox Foundation. Her work highlighted that loneliness affects all demographics, not just the elderly.

Following Cox’s death, nonprofit organizations and government collaboration led to the establishment of a loneliness commission. By 2017, loneliness was openly recognized as a public health priority. The next steps included appointing the world’s first minister for loneliness and developing a national strategy, supported by government funding and research. Field emphasized the importance of combining solid evidence with compelling stories to make the issue irrefutable and relatable.

The pandemic underscored the health implications of loneliness, as isolation became prevalent, Smith noted. However, the momentum around the issue decreased over time. “There’s not much you can say was good [that] happened in COVID, but one thing that did happen was that the stigma around loneliness was reduced,” Crouch said. This period helped to normalize discussions about loneliness as a real feeling.

In the U.S., attention peaked in 2023 when then-Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued a report on loneliness, highlighting its negative health effects. Trey Leveque explained that Murthy saw loneliness as a reflection of broader social connection issues, similar to how hunger indicates poverty. “The evidence and research became impossible to ignore,” Leveque remarked, as studies linked social connections to various aspects of health and societal participation.

Despite a fragmented focus in recent years, the issue remains significant. Cultural shifts continue globally, with increased individualism in Asian societies and the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, which may influence social interactions. In the U.K., June 16 marks the 10th anniversary of Cox’s death, which is expected to renew attention to loneliness. “I’m hopeful that some of the same actors and a new generation of actors will see — particularly with the arrival of artificial intelligence,” Smith said, emphasizing the importance of community interaction as a core human experience.

Original Source: news.harvard.edu

Trey Leveque, Liz Schwartz, Olivia Field, Tracey Crouch, and Alex Smith participated in a webinar moderated by Schwartz.
