The psychological thriller “Black Swan” has been reimagined as a musical, much to the delight of its film director, Darren Aronofsky. He expressed his admiration for the film’s frightening and intense nature, elements that are being carried over to the stage adaptation featuring Melanie Moore. The adaptation is currently showing at A.R.T.<\/p>\n
Released in 2010, the original film, known for its dark themes and unsettling conclusion, disturbed many viewers, including Jen Silverman. Silverman, who was in graduate school at the time, was inspired to write a musical adaptation. “It really freaked me out in really good ways,” Silverman remarked, describing the challenge of bringing that experience to the stage.<\/p>\n
The musical, directed by Sonya Tayeh and featuring music by Dave Malloy and Or Matias, opened officially on Wednesday and will run until July 5. Silverman first considered the project in 2020, focusing on portraying the internal conflicts of Nina, a young dancer striving for the lead in “Swan Lake” while contending with her controlling mother.<\/p>\n
Darren Aronofsky praised the adaptation for its innovative use of music and movement to modernize the story. Melanie Moore, who plays Nina, was invited to join by Tayeh, having previously collaborated on “So You Think You Can Dance” in 2011. Moore, a professional dancer, believes she brings a unique perspective to the role, understanding both the beauty and challenges of pursuing perfection.<\/p>\n
Moore discussed the sacrifices Nina makes in her artistic journey, noting, “There are certain things of yourself that sometimes you have to strip away in order to make things as artists.” Silverman added that the character’s vulnerability and determination are compellingly portrayed by Moore.<\/p>\n
The production integrates various theatrical techniques to replicate the film’s thrills without relying on cinematic tools, creating an intense experience through dance, singing, and music. “I think some people are going to leave horrified,” Moore commented, hoping the show will provoke discussion among audiences. “Black Swan” runs until July 5, with tickets available on the A.R.T website.<\/p>\n
