David Battat ’91, a Harvard alumnus known for his dedication to community service, will assume the role of Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) president on July 1. His career spans roles as a healthcare CEO, leadership educator, first responder, and long-term Harvard volunteer. Outgoing HAA President Will Makris, Ed.M. \u201900, praised Battat’s inclusive leadership style and commitment to uniting the alumni community.<\/p>\n
Battat recalls his undergraduate years at Harvard as a time of significant discovery and intellectual growth, influenced by supportive professors and peers. After leaving Harvard, he clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor, worked in criminal defense, and led a medical device company. He also initiated re-entry programs for former clients at the company’s facilities. His ongoing connection to Harvard includes various volunteer roles, such as serving on the Weatherhead Center’s advisory board and co-chairing the largest alumni admissions interviewing committee.<\/p>\n
As a volunteer firefighter, Battat was a first responder at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001. Inspired by the experience, he co-founded the Harvard Alumni Disaster Preparedness and Response Shared Interest Group. Encouraged by Harvard Kennedy School alumni in the NYPD, he became an instructor for newly promoted captains, teaching leadership and culture change.<\/p>\n
Sarah Karmon, HAA’s executive director, expressed confidence in Battat’s ability to lead, highlighting his extensive volunteer experience and skill in fostering alumni engagement. As president, Battat aims to promote constructive dialogue and active participation within the alumni network. He emphasizes that the passion behind alumni disagreements reflects the deep impact Harvard has had on its members. Battat will officially welcome the College Class of 2026 into the alumni community during the College Class Day celebration on May 27.<\/p>\n
