Witnessing such distant enthusiasm sparked her interest in understanding the formation of public opinion on foreign policy.

Pereverten, who completed her undergraduate studies in 2024, is now graduating from Harvard’s master’s program focusing on Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. Her thesis delves into how advocacy groups for Ukraine influenced American public opinion and rallied support for the country.

Her research involved interviews with 30 U.S. advocates and an original survey of over 600 Americans. It highlights how these groups utilized media coverage to galvanize support for humanitarian aid and policies. Her work suggests that public engagement is driven by media visibility and psychological investment in issues.

Growing up in Kyiv, Pereverten was already interested in political dynamics, having followed the 2013-2014 Euromaidan protests. She studied art and diplomacy in Kyiv before moving to the University of Wyoming in 2022 through a U.S. State Department scholarship.

After the invasion began, Pereverten became an active advocate for Ukraine in Wyoming, raising awareness through media and events. Her passion for international relations led her to Harvard, where she joined a diverse cohort in the Davis Center’s graduate program.

At Harvard, she acquired skills in data science and political psychology, crucial for her research on public opinion. In the summer of 2025, she interned at the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, D.C., contributing to diplomatic efforts despite personal challenges.

Her thesis adviser, George Soroka, praised her dedication and resilience. He believes that Pereverten and others like her will be instrumental in rebuilding Ukraine. Her commitment to understanding persuasion in foreign policy continues, motivated by personal connections to the conflict.

Pereverten, eager to return to Kyiv, plans to join the World Bank Group’s Pioneers program post-graduation, where she will focus on global aid monitoring. She looks forward to applying her Harvard education to support Ukraine’s recovery and growth.

Original Source: news.harvard.edu

Anastasiia Pereverten was deeply inspired by the American support for Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion as she studied in the U.S., over 5,000 miles away.
