Harvard economist Raj Chetty, who leads Opportunity Insights, has found that merely enhancing school quality isn’t sufficient to alter the economic future of children from low-income backgrounds. Addressing external factors that hinder academic success is also essential.

Though challenging, there are promising initiatives in various U.S. cities and towns that deserve more focus, according to Rob Watson, executive director of the EdRedesign Lab at Harvard Graduate School of Education. The Lab focuses on improving educational outcomes beyond classroom settings. Watson emphasized the importance of ensuring that research and innovations reach those who can implement them effectively.

To bridge the gap between academia, practitioners, and the public, the Lab introduced “Dream On,” a video series in partnership with independent journalists Joe Posner, co-founder of Vox Video, and James Watson, an Ed Redesign Lab fellow. “In communities across the political spectrum, people are collaborating to support youth and families,” Watson stated.

The series highlights U.S. communities and organizations addressing the challenges of growing up in impoverished areas. These local solutions are informed by Harvard and national research and can be replicated elsewhere. Watson noted that while there are no universal solutions to intergenerational poverty, effective strategies do exist, and practitioners are eager to learn and adapt these stories to their contexts.

The first episode features Communities in Schools, a nonprofit operating in 29 states and Washington, D.C., which provides schools with “navigators” to connect families and educators with necessary services like housing and healthcare. Watson pointed out that without these supports, students may not be ready to learn, and educators may struggle to perform their roles.

Future episodes will explore initiatives in Spartanburg, South Carolina, which have improved education, reduced crime, and encouraged new housing, as well as the Child Poverty Action Lab in Dallas, which aims to decrease child poverty through data-driven approaches. Watson, who grew up in a low-income area of Poughkeepsie, New York, witnessed the impact of community-driven solutions firsthand.

He hopes the series will illustrate the effectiveness of these efforts to policymakers and inspire collaboration among parents, educators, officials, and philanthropists to find solutions tailored to their communities. “We believe the strength of this project lies not only in addressing economic and educational challenges but also in showing how communities are uniting to support young people and families across America,” Watson concluded.

Original Source: news.harvard.edu

At a moment when the American dream seems increasingly out of reach for many, education continues to be crucial for helping children achieve their potential and escape poverty.
