According to Harvard writer Max Larkin, the common narrative of World War II often simplifies the conflict as one between liberal democracies and totalitarian states, overshadowing the Soviet Union’s immense sacrifices.

Hellbeck’s lecture, delivered last Thursday, revisited familiar historical events but emphasized the Soviet Union’s central role in the war against Nazi Germany. He has dedicated his career to highlighting the Eastern front, where the bloodiest battles occurred following the German invasion of the U.S.S.R. in 1941. The Soviets suffered approximately 26 million fatalities, over half civilians, while three-quarters of the Nazi military deaths took place in the East. The Battle of Stalingrad in 1943 marked a critical shift in the war.

Hellbeck’s book, “World Enemy No. 1,” explores the significance of anti-Soviet sentiment in the Nazi plans for mass extermination. While acknowledging the Nazis’ intense anti-Semitism, he argues that anti-Communism also played a crucial role in their genocidal policies. His book has sparked debate, particularly in Germany, where there is resistance to altering the established understanding of the Holocaust.

Hellbeck seeks to expand rather than overturn historical narratives, incorporating the Nazis’ anti-Communist motivations. During his lecture at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, he explained how Nazi ideology combined anti-Semitic and anti-Communist views, portraying Jews as Communist allies. Hellbeck delivered this lecture as part of the annual series in memory of Hilda B. Silverman, a peace activist associated with the University.

He detailed the Nazi regime’s focus on defeating Communism, which led to widespread propaganda against the Soviets. This included exhibitions teaching Germans to view Bolshevism as a Jewish-led threat. The Nazi extermination began with mass shootings in Soviet-occupied territories before the establishment of death camps, targeting Jews and Soviet officials.

Hellbeck argues that Nazi propaganda, which labeled Jews as “Stalin’s auxiliaries,” facilitated acceptance of mass killings. The historical gap he addresses remains relevant, as shown by a 2019 European Union resolution equating Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union as totalitarian regimes. Hellbeck believes this undermines the sacrifices made by Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians during Nazi occupation.

Concluding his lecture, Hellbeck called for an honest reassessment of history, acknowledging that the Soviet role in Nazi plans is often inconvenient for contemporary narratives. He stressed that historical accuracy should remain free from political influence to foster meaningful future discussions. “Historical truth is not subject to negotiation,” Hellbeck stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining integrity in historical scholarship.

Original Source: news.harvard.edu

Photographer Niles Singer from Harvard captured images for the Nation & World segment titled “Call for ‘historical truth’ in our narrative of Nazi defeat.” Jochen Hellbeck, a historian from Rutgers University, urges recognition of the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Hitler.
