Liz Mineo, a Harvard Staff Writer, reports that Solis, inspired by the pioneering female politicians from Costa Rica, arrived at Harvard dreaming of a political career. “Since childhood, I wanted to be president,” Solis stated, emphasizing her desire to study government for her country’s benefit.

However, an unexpected passion emerged during an art class in her junior year. “Art offered me an experience unlike any other,” Solis explained, describing how painting made her lose track of time. Although she focuses on government with a secondary in Theater, Dance & Media, Solis now plans to pursue a master’s degree in fine arts post-graduation. While politics remains a future ambition, her art journey has provided personal growth and leadership skills.

“Art has allowed me to discover myself,” Solis remarked, admitting she never envisioned becoming an artist. Her artistic journey began in a class taught by Karthik Pandian, an associate professor in Art, Film, and Visual Studies. Pandian noted Solis’ “openness” and dedication to creativity, highlighting her unique approach to the class’s open-ended assignments. Solis thrived in this environment, producing over 40 pieces and even creating a mural at her former high school in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Solis credits her mother for her adaptability and integrity. Her mother, a single parent and real estate agent, provided for Solis while engaging in local politics, inspiring her daughter’s ambitions. Costa Rica, with a population of 5.2 million, has elected two female presidents, and women hold a majority in the legislative assembly. Professor Pandian believes Solis’ artistic exploration sets an example, suggesting students often focus on careers over humanities and arts, missing opportunities for impact through creativity.

Pandian emphasizes the importance of diverse ways to influence the world, advocating for cultural and consciousness transformation through art. Solis’ journey exemplifies how unexpected paths can lead to profound personal and societal contributions.

Original Source: news.harvard.edu

Daniela Solis, captured by Veasey Conway, Harvard Staff Photographer, finds herself unable to stop painting, despite her aspirations of becoming president.
